On July 9, the first of 22,000 piles was driven in the new Hydrocracker Unit area at the construction site of the Garyville Major Expansion project. Pile driving in the new Crude Unit and Coker Unit will begin later in July. It is expected to take 12 to 13 rigs approximately eight or nine months to complete the pile driving. If you placed these steel piles end to end, they would stretch from Garyville, La., to Houston, Texas. Approximately 6,000 reinforced concrete piles have been received to date. Preparation of the construction site continues with the main focus on installation of a new parking lot in the northwest corner of the new site. The new parking area is expected to be completed in September. Another key area of focus is installation of site drainage to allow for faster dewatering of the site. Some additional activities going on at this time include installation of temporary facilities, power and communications to support the increase in construction activity throughout the remainder of the year. |
