About Marathon
Brief History
![]() |
In 1973, ECOL, Ltd. began construction of the refinery. The original facilities were completed in 1976. In September of 1976, Marathon purchased and started up the plant. The first barrel of crude oil was refined in November of 1976. Garyville is the last grassroots refinery built in the U.S.
The refinery is situated on what was the 2,950 acre San Francisco Plantation. The plantation house was restored by Marathon and has been designated a National Historic Landmark. It is open to the public and is operated by the San Francisco Plantation Foundation.
Over the years, there have been many expansions and upgrades at the refinery, such as the completion of a fluid catalytic cracking unit in 1979; a coker in 2001; a gasoline desulfurization unit in 2005 and a distillate hydrotreating unit in 2006.
